VO2 Testing directly measures the volume and gas concentrations of inspired and expired air to determine your cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. The more oxygen you can use during high level exercise, the more energy you can produce.
Our testing method is is considered the most accurate as it involves either exercising on a treadmill or a bike with a face mask at an intensity that increases every few minutes until exhaustion. It is designed to achieve a maximal effort.
Along with your resting heart rate (RMR), the results from your VO2 Test can be used to develop a more precise target heart rate range.
Preparing for a VO2 Test:
- Bring medications you require during
exercise e.g. asthma puffer.
- We recommended you have your
last meal 2-3 hours before the test and a light snack 1 hour before the
test if required – it is recommended these meals/snacks include a source of
- Avoid participating in any heavy
exercise before the test.
- We will talk to you about what to do
if doing all 3 tests on the one day.
- Wear suitable exercise clothing including
enclosed running shoes.
- Bring your water bottle & a
towel (a water cooler is available)
